Celebrating Diwali with Safety and joy

Introduction

Diwali is also known as ‘Deepavali’, which literally means rows (avali) of lights (deepa) in Sanskrit. This festival of lights is celebrated on the darkest night (Amavasya) of the Kartik month in the Indian calendar. It marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and the homecoming of Lord Rama after an exile of 14 years.

As a matter of fact, this festival is the symbol of victory of the forces of virtue over evil. The 5 day festival starts as follows:

 1st Day:Dhanteras

  • saturday,october 22, 2022
  • Women purchase gold, silver, or new utensils. On this day, lamps are lit all night in reverence to Lord Yama, the god of death, and hence, also known as ‘Yamadeepdaan’. This is meant to get rid of the fear of an untimely death.

2nd Day:Naraka Chaturdashi/ Choti diwali

  • The tradition is to wake up early in the morning and have a bath before sunrise. Lord Krishna killed narakasur on the day before Naraka Chaturdashi, liberated the imprisoned damsels, and also recovered the precious earrings of Aditi. Hence, this tradition of an early morning bath signifies the victory of the Divine over negative forces.

3rd Day:Lakshmi Puja/ Diwali

  • The most important day of the celebrations is the third day – Lakshmi Puja.It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi graces the earth on this night and showers us with blessings of abundance and prosperity.
  • People wear their finest clothes, worship the Goddess Lakshmi, illuminate their homes with diyas and beautiful rangolis.

4th Day:Govardhan Puja

  • On this day, miniature clay and cow dung figurines are made to depict the event.

5th Day:Bhai Dooj

  • On this day, brothers and sisters get together to do the tikka ceremony, with the sisters praying for the long life of their brothers.
